GMU Professors Use MIX Resources to Enhance Their Curriculum

This semester, several GMU professors have taken advantage of the resources in the MIX to add to their class curriculum.  When CVPA professor Deb Sivigny wanted to add a section on LED circuitry and special effects to her design class, she reached out to the MIX to help develop a workshop for her students.  Our instructors at the MIX delivered a hands-on workshop on electronic circuits, soldering, and LED lighting for the students to incorporate into their designs.

Professor Adam Bradley incorporated the MIX into his studio foundations class this semester.  His class covers a wide range of media, including drawings, painting, papercraft, printmaking, wire, wood, ceramics, steel, and digital media.  3D printing offers unique possibilities for creating sculptures that might not be possible through other media. His students came to the MIX to develop their digital sculptures, consulting with MIX staff on how best to design their digital creations for successful creation using the MIX’s 3D printers.  Our MIX instructors provided a training session for Professor Bradley’s class on how to set up and handle 3D printers and provided one-on-one consultations with each student sculptor to prepare for printing.  The class then proceeded to print their projects, bringing their digital designs to life.

Other professors used the MIX as a launchpad for student projects, encouraging them to take advantage of the MIX space for prototyping and creating.  Students from Math 401 used the 3D printers to create 3-dimensional models of mathematical equations to visualize their formulas while engineering students from ENGR 107 used hand tools and workspace in the MIX to create prototype vehicle delivery systems.

Whatever department your class may be from, the MIX can provide tools, training, and resources to enhance your curriculum.  Reach out to the MIX to see how you can incorporate the MIX into your class.
