Saving Costs on a Fencing Score Box

The GMU fencing club has been using the MIX for a variety of crucial operations to their craft. Last semester was their first semester utilizing the MIX for their foil wiring, which the MIX talks about with President Daniel Delannes-Molka and member Alex Farley on the MIX It Up! Podcast.

Like any organization , they are always looking for ways to use their daily and competition expenditures wisely. For practices, fencers rely on a score box that registers and display each touch (hit) during a bout. The average score box costs anywhere from 400-700 dollars, a price that weighs heavy for any campus RSO. Daniel Delannes-Molka, a Computer Science PhD candidate and President of GMU Fencing, did not hesitate to utilize components at the MIX electronics station and the BambuLabs X1 Carbon 3D printer to craft a custom score board for less than 30 dollars. Daniel printed the outer shell using a 3D printer and the components inside from an ArduinoUno board.

These photos show members of the GMU Fencing and their recently assembled electronic score box.
